We were introduced to hOle books by KBC and are forever thankful for them! hOle books are great for new independent readers and children who are transitioning to chapter books.
The story revolves around 4 friends from a small village in Tamil Nadu. One of the friends, Chitti, had gone on a holiday to visit her aunt and uncle in Chennai, and the other three were waiting eagerly for her to come back with a surprise gift. The surprise that Chitti had brought turned out to be books that none of her friends were interested in. But, Chitti is a determined and creative girl who finds ways to spark her friends’ interest in reading.
One of the ways Chitti encourages her friends to read is by sharing the stories and adventures she discovers in her magical book box. She also shows them how reading can be fun and exciting by acting out the characters and bringing the stories to life. Soon all her friends and kids in the village start borrowing books from her, which gives her the idea to start her own library. Just as the four friends decide on starting a library on Appa’s old tractor, they are met with the challenge of it being sold. They have until the month’s end to convince him not to sell it. My son who is 7 was very excited to read this and said I wish we too had a magic library on wheels! It is fascinating to see the kind of imagination kids have when reading books.
Overall, Chitti’s Traveling Book Box is a heartwarming and uplifting story that celebrates the power of books and the joy of reading. It is a great book to inspire young readers and encourage them to develop a love for reading.
