This is my story for the #kbcKaadooMonkeyTales contest.
It was our team outing to Ranthambore and I joined only a day after missing 2 safaris as I had scheduled presentations. Only when I reached, people shared how they spotted tigers on the very first safari itself!
With a bit of disappointment (for me) and loads of hope, we left for an afternoon safari post lunch and siesta. Deer, neelgai, gaurs, loads of birds and a few reptiles were sighted, but not a tiger.
The next day’s morning safari was almost the same as the one, apart from a minor change of getting a glimpse of a tiger which went into hiding, because too many jeeps were gathered. More disappointment due to human behaviour (than the hiding tiger), as people just didn’t know how to respect the sanctity of the place they had come to. They didn’t find any difference between a zoo and the jungle and kept creating hullabaloo which disturbed the jungle and its residents.
Evening time was our last safari and I was just praying that I get to see a tiger. Our forest ranger got a call that a tiger was spotted near a stream and we headed there. He was hiding and watching over a herd of deer. Ten minutes passed, followed by another 10, and we started losing patience believing the tiger will never come out. But our ranger assured us that we will witness a sight of a lifetime!
Believe it or not, in the next few minutes we saw the tiger charging and racing towards a deer. The chase went on for about 5-7 minutes and at the end of it, the tiger overpowered the deer to make a kill! Trust me, it felt like we were watching some film on National Geography! We just couldn’t believe what we had witnessed.
Many people visit jungles, few sight a tiger and rarely people like us get to see a tiger making a kill. It was trip of a lifetime! Post that I have visited several national parks but never saw something like that! Truly, a once in a lifetime experience it was!
