Some books have a title so intriguing that you have to pick them up. This is one such book. I could never think of an alligator and stapler in the same sentence but then we got this book to review! What is more interesting is the fact that while I connected the alligator and stapler only when I read the story, Ishani was quick to draw the connection as soon as she read the title. It is true that kids have a very vivid imagination and reading enhances that ability even more.
This early chapter book is about twin sisters, Tara and Arzoo, who experience magic all around them. It starts when they end up leaving their stapler by the riverside during one of their picnics with their parents. This adventure during their picnic with the alligator and the stapler is followed by many other magical adventures. They are even able to enter each other’s dreams and are able to dream together! Soon, they realise that everything around them is talking to them and expressing their feelings – the kitchen, the trees, the snakes and ladders from the game!! Tara and Arzoo are initially surprised by the fact that everything talks to them but soon they start enjoying these conversations and finding ways to help all animals/ things that share their feelings with them.
Some of their adventures are covered in a single chapter while some are divided into 2 or 3 chapters. All of these are not only magical stories, but are funny stories as well. The black and white illustrations, though few, are thoughtfully done and adequate enough to keep the reader engaged.
What Ishani liked about the book is, of course, the magic and the adventures. What I liked about the book is how it weaves in the every day topics like homemade food and cleaning up your room in a fun way. What the book also beautifully captures are the virtues of kindness, empathy and acceptance – something I look forward to in every book.
Still intrigued about the Alligator and the Stapler? Want your child to explore magical stories that can help you convince them to eat homemade food? Want them to read stories of kindness and empathy in a non-preachy way? THEN THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU!
