Title: Shoo, Crow!
Author: Kavitha Punniyamurthi
Illustrator: Priya Kuriyan
Publisher: Duckbill Books, Penguin Random House India
Type: Paperback
Pages: 32
Recommended Age: 5 – 7 years
Two children run through a field, waving their arms wildly “like a windmill gone bonkers” trying to shoo away the crows, but the birds seem to have befriended the scarecrow, sitting on its head enjoying their spoils from the farm.
This is the first page of the brilliantly written ‘Shoo Crow’, which had my 4 year old completely hooked.
There is nothing more that young children like in a book than a seemingly unsolvable problem, narrated so funnily that you fall off from the bed laughing. The problem of keeping the crows away from the fields, and trying every funny solution they can think of, makes for the perfect laughter riot. It doesn’t end there though, in fact, this is just the beginning. Things get funnier and the decibel gets louder when an uncle, who is learning the harmonica, visits for a few days.
Apart from the excellent story and illustrations, what I enjoyed the most was the Onomatopoeia throughout the book. It gives the reader so many opportunities to act out and make the read aloud more fun. I almost got the shivers while enacting,
“It’s like a hundred chalks being dragged across a blackboard! Kireeech – Kireeech- Kireeech”.
My 4 yr old bird lover especially enjoyed the last page, where Havaldar Hook asks the kids to identify some of the common birds. If you and your child like reading funny stories, this one is an absolute must get.
There are other hook books published by Duckbill which are just as funny and engaging as this book is. You can read my review of another hook book, KITTEN TROUBLE here. Not to miss, I Want A Pet!, Cyrus the Whyrus, Passepartout, Is That You?
Get Hooked: The Hook Book Box Set – a set of 11 Hook Books (440 pages) is also available which works out to be more economical!
